What is Wheatgrass?

Chances are you've heard of wheatgrass and I'm willing to bet you know someone who drinks this stuff like crazy. I don't blame them. It's easy to go crazy over wheatgrass.

But what is wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass is simply the young grass of a certain type of wheat plant. Wheatgrass is grown, harvested by cutting up, then freshly juiced for drinking.

Throughout history, it has been used not only for human consumption but even for animal consumption.

Why Drink Wheatgrass?

What is it with wheatgrass and more importantly why do people drink it?

In a nutshell, wheatgrass is filled with all around goodness. It has chlorophyll (yes, that wonderful green stuff in plants), amino acids, vitamins and minerals and even enzymes.

Wheatgrass is the complete package. A single ounce shot of wheatgrass is the equivalent of 1kg of the healthiest green vegetables.

Wheatgrass Health Benefits

The health benefits of wheatgrass can be summarized into 4 distinct parts:

  1. It cleanses the body
  2. It replenishes and promotes the production of blood
  3. It improves the body's digestion and metabolism
  4. It nourishes the body with vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids

Wheatgrass Health Benefit #1 - Cleaning the body

Wheatgrass cleans and detoxifies the body. Because of its high concentration of vitamins B, C and E, it is able to destroy and eliminate free radicals that causes cancer. Wheatgrass is also high in saponin, which is essential in carrying out toxins and other harmful substance away from the cells and bloodstream of the body.

It is said to be the fastest and surest way to eliminating internal waste and providing an environment that is balanced and healthy.

Wheatgrass Health Benefit #2 - Replenishes the blood supply

I admit that all these years of drinking this green stuff, I didn't know it had this ability of replenishing the body's blood. Not until I was researching did I find out.

Apparently, because chlorophyll is so close in molecular structure to our own hemoglobin or blood, when consumed, our body easily converts the abundant chlorophyll in wheatgrass into our own blood.

Besides this effect, chlorophyll is also the ultimate healing agent. Before the advent of penicillin and modern medicine, chlorophyll has been used centuries ago to heal all kinds of wounds, burns and aches. It is also able to clean the body internally as well as externally.

Wheatgrass Benefit #3 - Improving the body's digestion and metabolism

Wheatgrass is also high in enzymes. These enzymes are terrific at getting your digestive system running at peak performance and that is why it is highly recommended to drink wheatgrass daily.

Wheatgrass health Benefit #4 - Nourishing the body with vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids

Aside from the above three health benefits of wheatgrass, we shouldn't discount the fact that wheatgrass is full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Similar to eating lots of veggies everyday, drinking a shot of wheatgrass gives you the nutrients you need.

You know why you need vitamins and minerals, but if you're wondering what amino acids are for, they're used by the body for cell regeneration and growth. And it is also why body builders drink this stuff daily!

Great information. The importance of essential minerals and vitamins for optimum health are often overlooked in daily diets. I have heard of wheatgrass but didn't realise it's health benefits. You have inspired me to grow some!
