What is Kefir?

Never heard of Kefir? No need to worry. Before my best friend gave me a bunch of kefir grains about 5 years ago I didn't have a clue either.

Kefir is a fermented or cultured beverage, originating centuries ago, made with probiotic kefir grains and milk. The resulting beverage is what is called Kefir or Kifer.

This Kefir is extremely abundant in friendly bacteria. The kind of bacteria that promotes good health like yogurt and other probiotics.

And it is because of this that Kefir is so healthy. Healthier than probiotic pills supplement and and even yogurt.

Kefir is Easy!

Making Milk Kefir

Making Kefir isn't hard. In fact it takes less than 10 minutes a day to make your own kefir at home! Just follow this step by step tutorial and you'll be making your own milk kefir in no time!

Items

  1. 1 or 2 tbsp of Real live kefir grains (see section: Why Real Live Kefir Grains Only)
  2. 1 quart milk
  3. 1 liter glass jar
  4. cloth or lid for covering jar
  5. plastic strainer
  6. plastic spoon
  7. cup

Steps

  1. Put the live kefir grains into glass jar
  2. Add the fresh milk into jar
  3. Cover jar making sure it is not air tight
  4. Place covered jar in room temperature and away from direct sunlight
  5. Wait 3 days for fermentation
  6. Strain kefir grains from kefir using plastic strainer and into cup
  7. Drink and enjoy your homemade Kefir

What to do with the remaining kefir grains?

  1. Place in jar
  2. Repeat the above kefir making process again for next batch

Storing kefir grains, if you don't want to make another batch of milk kifer.

  1. Place in container
  2. Add 1 cup of milk
  3. Store in refrigerator
  4. Change milk weekly

Kefir Grains is Where Kefir Begins

Kefir Grains are what makes Kefir. Without it we wouldn't have lovely kefir to drink.

According to Wikipedia:

Kefir Grains are white cauliflower like objects that are a mix of bacteria and yeasts in a complex mixture of proteins, lipids and sugars.

And it is this that makes kefir so healthy and nutritious. These bacteria, friendly and beneficial, enters our body into the stomach and starts to do its magic!It cleans up the digestive system and has an effect on all other bodily functions.

Where to Get Genuine Kefir Grains?

Getting live genuine kefir grains doesn't have to entail a treasure map. I've found one source that sells extremely robust and natural kefir grains.

Kefir Culture / Kefir Starter and other Kefir Products

There are other alternatives to making Kefir besides using kefir grains. If you look hard enough you will see a variety of commercialized kefir products in the market today.

There are kefir cultures, kefir starters, instant kefir powder mix and so on. All these are touted to be more "convenient" and the results are "instantaneous."

However, what the manufacturers of these products aren't telling you is that these products aren't anywhere as close to as being healthy as using kefir grains to make kifer.

And that is why I recommend using only genuine real live kefir grains for making all your kefir needs!

I a was not familiar with Kefir before reading this. Seems to have some beneficial health advantages. Will have to reseach further.
